The celebration of Eid al-Adha is a joyous and holy moment and special occasion for the Muslim community around the world. Eid al-Adha is marked on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the lunar based Islamic calendar. The day also marks the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage. Known popularly as Bakrid or Bakra Eid, Eid al- Adha means the ‘Festival of Sacrifice’. According to legend, the holy occasion is marked to honour the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim .The story goes that the Prophet kept on having a dream about slaughtering his son Ismail to fulfill the wishes of Allah. On explaining the dreams to Ismail, he ordered his father to do on what he kept seeing in his sleep. As Prophet Ibrahim was preparing for the sacrifice, the Almighty became impressed with him and sent Angel Gabriel with a lamb from heaven so that it can be slaughtered in place of his son Ismail. In this way, the festival of Eid al-Adha begun and a goat or lamb is sacrificed annually on this day. As per the tradition, some of the meat is distributed to the family offering the sacrifice while the rest is distributed among the poor and needy.
As every celebration is marked with the preparation and feasting on delectable fares, Eid al-Adha is also no different. A variety of mouth-watering delicacies are prepared for celebrating Eid al-Adha in a grand manner. Community feasts are a common sight in homes as people get together with their closed ones to eat a hearty meal happily. People offer their early morning prayers to the Almighty Allah just before the sun enters the zuhr time (mid-day prayer time) which is followed by a sermon by the imam. Meanwhile, families step out in their new attires to visit and greet their closed ones and various kinds of sweets are shared to celebrate the joyous and holy occasion. It is believed that offering donation on Eid al-Adha is very good for the one performing the generous deed.
